Dog Breed DNA Test Database – Rough Collie

Rough Collie
Appearance

Very Glamorous with its luxuriant coat, the overall impression of the Rough Collie is of strength and elegance.

They are perfectly balanced and with their abundant coats and elongated, narrow, chiselled heads, they are easily recognisable.

The head is the Rough Collie’s characteristic feature which is wedge shaped, tampering from the ears to the nose. The muzzle is well rounded, and never square. When compared to its very similar and partly descendent, the Shetland Sheepdog, the Rough Collies are not only larger but also have a have a blunter face. The planes of the muzzle and the top of the skull should also be parallel in collies, with a slight but distinct stop, as opposite to the Shelties.

Even though there is considerable variation in the colour of the head, three coat colours are recognised for Rough Collies: sable and white, tricolour and blue merle with typical white collie markings.

The breed standard for height is 22-26 in (55.8cm -66cm) at the shoulder and for weight 45 – 75 lbs for males. For females the desired height is between 20 to 24 in (50.8 to 61 cm) whereas the weight should range between 40 to 70 lbs.

Temperament

Originally bred to work in the Scottish mountains herding and guarding flocks, the Rough Collie today has retained its working instincts and became a companion dog and excellent family member. Intelligent, happy, active and loyal, the Rough Collie has a friendly disposition and should show no trace of aggressiveness or nervousness. However, they must be well socialised to prevent shyness. They have a calm and dignified attitude and are powerful whilst gracious. Rough Collies are generally great with children with whom they love to play with and are very protective.
